The Giving Week Experiment

Image

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

It all started with a Bible verse I read. It is found in the book of proverbs, one of my favorites. Proverbs is a book of wisdom and knowledge. King Solomon is said to be the author of this book and it was one of these verses that caught my attention.

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” Proverbs 11:24

I really like the first part of that verse about giving freely, yet gaining more. That sounds like a win-win situation, but then I read the second part. “Another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” Unduly can also mean, improperly, unfairly, or excessively. All which, according to that verse, leads to poverty. I don’t want any of that poverty business. Been there, done that.

However, it had me thinking about purposefully giving for a week. I wanted to see this verse come to pass in my life, so began my week of the giving experiment. My findings were as follows, it was fun! I really don’t know how people can be stingy with their things, time, or talents when giving is so much fun! It feels good, makes me happy and blesses me more to give than to receive.

I would wake up every morning thinking, what can I give away today! There was no boundaries, no rules. The Bible verse was not specific, so I gave away a variety of things. One day I cooked a tasty breakfast burrito and gave it to my neighbor. Another day I gave some money to my nephew, and then once I gave several dozen cookies to a family.

What did I gain? Surprisingly in my one week I gained a beautiful shirt, an awesome Bible study book, and a leather chair. But more importantly I was happier! So many people want to be happier. They think material things or more money will bring them happiness. But I am telling you giving instead of getting is where it’s at!

I also felt closer to God. God is a giver! He gave us Jesus to wash away our sins. He gave us forgiveness, a better life, and eternal life. Being a giver has drawn me closer to God and that was the biggest reward I gained. I challenge you to conduct your own giving week experiment and tell me how it went.

Until next time,

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

The country is hurting.

The common thread running through is confusion, and fear.

As a Christian I know too well this is fertile ground for the devil to do his work. He thrives in fed up, broken people. He incites them to lose control and do his bidding. Even the strongest of us can fall for his deception. That’s what I see in the looters, setting businesses on fire, destroying things, and hurting people.

So what can people do, how can things change?

Trust God and trust the system. It may not be perfect, but we know the One who is perfect, God. God is a God of justice. And he will bring justice where it is needed. So let us continue in prayer and pray to the God of Justice that his will be done in Ferguson.

Being A Godly Wife

Image

I am excited to tell you I have a Guest Blogger today! Sharon Tovar-Davis, who is also my sister. She has a great message to share about being a godly wife. Enjoy!

When I read Genesis 19:16-26 I get this unsettling feeling. Lot, his wife and two daughters were running for their lives! The Angels of God said to them, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

lot_bible__image_2_sjpg429

We all know how the story ends with Sodom and Gomorrah. But for Lot’s wife, she disobeyed the Angels of God. Her disobedience cost her, her life. Immediately she became a pillar of salt! (Gen 19:26)

Her disobedience clearly had an impact. Jesus also mentions her actions in Luke 17:32, “Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.”

Samuel even talks about obedience being better than sacrifices! 1 Samuel 15:22.

Clearly we should be obedient in all aspects of our lives. With Eve’s major disobedience from eating the fruit off the tree of the Knowledge of good and evil, (Gen 3:6), and Lot’s wife, we have some big examples to learn from.

But are we really learning? Ask yourself this ladies, are you obedient to your husband? When he sees you tired and says to you to not worry about the laundry, or cleaning up to just come and sit down and rest, do you? When he gives you money to spend on yourself and you take it but to only buy food for the house, the kids some new items and you eventually get yourself something off the clearance rack are you really being obedient to your husband? I know it’s nothing compared to Eve and Lot’s wife…but it’s the same action. Disobedience. And really, those little acts of disobedience turn to bigger actions; And that causes strife in the marriage. Can you think of any bigger actions of disobedience you have had lately?

The husband is the head of the house. He is the leader. We are the helper. I know it’s hard to deal with, but we need to. It’s our role. Our purpose. Yes our purpose! God’s plan for us. When we follow God’s plan, it becomes an honor. We are happy! And when mama is happy, the house is happy!

Now how do we get to be in this godly wife role? The answer is simple. Get close to God. Really get to know Him. Pray, read the Bible and dig deep into what he has written for us woman to be towards our husbands. Next pray for your husband. Pray for everything! His work, finances, sexuality and affection, mind and wisdom, cast out fears and temptations, health, protection, integrity, fatherhood, marriage, faith and future. This will change your marriage and turn your true purpose and plan God has set forth for you.

Proverbs 31:10-12 says “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.”

Isn’t that how we really want to be? I do. Lets all start fresh today. God is a God of starting over.

God Bless you,

Sharon
