What Is Eternal Life?

Yesterday, I sat down and read the Gospel of John. While reading there were two verses that jumped out at me. The first verse was John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believed in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

The second verse was John 17:3.

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

Both these verses talk about eternal life. Many people don’t realize that we were originally created to have eternal life, to never die. In the beginning, God had warned Adam in the Garden of Eden to not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. That if he did he would surely die (gen. 2:16-17) and as you know he did disobey God.

The other aspect of eternal life is that we would know the true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent. Now don’t get Heaven mixed up with eternal life. They are not the same thing. Heaven is a place. As a believer, Heaven is our true home and where Jesus is preparing a place for us. After you die you will go to Heaven, if you are a believer that is.

You see there is an afterlife. The question is where will you spend your afterlife? There are only two destinations, Heaven and Hell. Those that are believers will spend their eternal life in Heaven with God. Those that are unbelievers will spend their eternal death in Hell.

The key word here is eternal, that is forever. Forever is a long time! Jesus said, he is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:16) So to have eternal life and to be sure of your heavenly destination, won’t you believe in Jesus?
